stupid question myabe but btdc means to the right of the 0 mark and atdc means to the left of 0 mark - and when setting timing at idle with everything connected as normal the timing should be 5 degrees to the right...right?

Give us a clue as to what engine and we may be able and inclined to help you more!


And you've got your before and after the wrong way round.... (the scale might have VOR and NACHT marked on it - guess what VOR is German for!?)


If you've got a 2 litre Aircooled CU engine then 5 ATDC is correct - to the right - as long as you have all vac hoses connected and the vac unit is working correctly - the retard pipe from behind the airbox pulls the timing from about 7 BTDC to 5 ATDC if all is working properly.

Keith the engine is a 2ltr cu i have suggested to skins to read up ignition timing on the wiki.You said if the vac unit is working proberly.On the wiki you have a further explanation of what this mean and the function of the centrifugal weights.Would you be so kind and and give a simplified procedure for ignition timing setting using a strobe light and any tips.Reason i ask this is skins has a trip to me in Surrey for a flange seal to be fitted i was thinking engine probs due to timing
