My '87 1.9DG has recently developed a squeel/moan. I say recently, it may be that I've only really heard it after some s### ###d smashed a window and stole my stereo! It seems to be kind of a gringing squeel that lasts about half a second.

The noise seems to occur mainly when taking up the drive after changing gear. It doesn't seem to happen when i coast in any given gear and then accelerate away. I did think it may have been the driveshaft, as I recently (two months ago) popped the n/s one off to replace the inner boot and the cv joint was pretty worn. I've checked and all appears to be secure and tight on the drive shaft.

That leads me to the gearbox, clutch or linkages. Whilst I'm vaugely competent I've never dropped a gearbox and I understand from Wiki that the linkages can be a pain to get right. The clutch isn't slipping but I don't know if this noise is a pre-cursor to that?

Can anyone point me in the right direction. Am I missing the point with the drive shaft - there's no rythmic knocking. I'm leaning towards worn bushes in the linkage but I'm guessing/being hopeful it's not the gearbox. It's a five speed by the way.

I hope it isn't too pricey anyway. Ive just gone mad and got engaged!

does it do it when pulling away/slipping the clutch?
sounds like it could either be the clutch plate itself or the release bearing on the clutch..
linkages are not a pain if taken off correctly (ie just at the box..) only if the rest of the system is messed with..

I've found the source of the offending niose, and lets just say it wasn't from under the van but in it. Or more specifically the fridge!
Yeap, those last few beers I didn't manage and left in there rolling around were making the oddest of noises. It really did sound like something big/mechanical rather than a couple of cans bumping about. No honestly!

Don't think I shall be able to post on here again out of embarrasment!

I don't envy the hard work lying on your back solving that problem

i drove home from woodfest thinking the back wheels were falling off. it was a bag of beercans the mrs had hung on the bumper
