t25 diesel hard to start after a run?

this only just started happening today, went round my mums to drop something off, when i got back in the bus after bout 15 mins it wouldnt fire up for about a minuet. the glow plugs were not lighting up so im assuming the engine was hot enough to start without them.
it was like it was flooded or something.
finally it did start, and ran fine.
a bit later i went to the shops got back in the van again it was hard to start but eventually fired up.

anyone got any ideas?

Mine is the same starts fine when cold or if hot if you start it with in about 5 minuets of stoping but between very hot and the glow plugs coming on again hard starting and it a new engine so i would like to know why this is.

hey,

What engine have you got n/a, TD?, any idea of millage, what year?

When it does finally start, does it puff out a load of smoke? Like its cold or under load.

I have just got in from re doing the 26 year old wiring for the glow plugs and i know that the engine has started up much better. I believe the reason the wire had started to deteriorate much faster because i change the glow plugs and so more current was being drawn then previous (seeing as when i changed the glow plugs only one worked).

Does sound like a fuel problem to me

this has only been happening since i took out the thermostat so today i bought a new thermostat and ill put that in and see what happens.

Mine does it, 1.6TD. If you disconnect the blue wire from the rear of the cylinder head sensor (this is where the glow-plug relay gets it`s temp signal from) then the glow plugs will come on even when hot, and it will fire up after having the plugs glow for a few secs. Does on mine anyway.

I had exactly the same symptoms on a Peugeot/Citroen TD engine, it wouldn`t start until the glow plugs had done their thing (Peugeot must know about this as the plugs come on everytime you go to start it, even when stinking hot). That`s what gave me the idea to try it on the `van.

Baxter says it`s to do with setting the valve clearances correctly, so maybe worth trying that :)

It also helps to pull the "choke" on every start ...cold or hot. It certainly doesn't do any harm.

thanks westy, the last time it did this i just couldnt get it to start so i tried that rememdy that you said and it started straight away.

but i was worried that leaving it off the sensor may cause problems so i decided to put a thermostat back in the engine, but now i have got all my old probs back of trying to get the air out the sytem etc etc.
another thing i found is that when i was running the van without the themostat in, i stopped getting the juddering when moving away?

what i think ill do is take the thermostat back out and just run it with the wire disconnected from the sensor.
But first of all i need to get another hose for the top of the header tank as mine has now busted, and im buggerd so if anyone has a spare can you let me know.
