A Large Bang - Not a misfire

1982 Watercooled 1.9DF engine
We arrived back from Bashtie on Friday & the van appeared to run really well, completing 6-700 miles. When we got back I replaced about ¼ litre of oil
On the Saturday, after emptying the van I reversed it off the drive onto the gravel & heard a huge bang, which sounded like an impact bang, rather than an engine bang.
I assumed I had hit one of the plant pots with the rear bumper. I checked around the van, but could not see that I had hit anything & assumed it was the neighbour in his garden.
Yesterday my Golf decided to immobilise itself in the works car park, so I caught the bus home & decided to use the van to collect the boys. I started the van & it sounded seriously awful, I immediately turned it off.
I called in at the local VW garage today to ask if they could do a home visit as I did not want to cause any further damage. Hopefully they should be out in the next few days, I think they wrote in their book “Dropped Block"|.
It sounds very serious to me, I would appreciate it if anyone could advise what a “Dropped Block"| means or whether anything else springs to mind.
By the way, the Golf is now mobile, took it for a diagnostic check & they could not find an error. Speaking to our neighbour, her car did the same yesterday & was only parked about 600mtrs from mine - Spooky or what, were we visited by UFO's or something??
