what are you after?? the strongest stock vw box is the four speed from a 2000 Aircooled.

Speak to Aidan "Beaker" about your yeauirements.. he can do stock boxes and can get the uprated gears.. but.. as said.. when you start talking heavily modded T25 box, you need deep pockets..
Porsche G50 box if you are going with big HP!!! but thats a hell of a lot of work... and even more cost..

If you want to rebuild your own, you'll need to beg, borrow, steal or make a socket for undoing/retorquing the 30 splined huge torque lockring, you could of course chisel the old un off, and 'retorque' the 16 quid new one up with a chisel/drift like some 'VW specialists' do! [hi Stu VW, Wymeswold!]

Classic mini I presume? Same here, those sc/cr boxes made a very strog fast box, complete with a big 'S' engine to bolt it to a nice combination.
:)

You will need a few special tools to do it properly... and some of the rebuiders don't even have them all.
If you want gear-sets, bearing sets or practical combinations, Aidan is worth a call - as there are a lot of options you need to weigh up.

What is your target engine and vehicle weight?

Some would say the box isn't up to it without Weddle gears (Aus gears sold by Weddle actually), which are stronger but having less teeth are noisier... however, some SVX's in the US have std boxes, engines about 200/220.

As said above, 4-speed boxes are reputed to be stronger.
What is the Subie engine you're going to use.

Aidan has the correct tools (as said some of the "gearbox rebiulders do not and bodge things)
Have a chat to him too..

I think when people say tha tthe 5 speed is weaker.. there are a lot of variables... just bolting on more hp and expecting the box to cope is a bit extreme.. how old the box is and how has it been "ab"used...
And treating it with a little respect goes a long way... my 1983 2wd caravelle 5 speed has 300k+ km on it.. changes fine, but a little leaky now!!!
