I have wooden units in my van, not sure what wood, but it has been varnished and is in need of an overhaul. Can anyone recommend the best way to get a good finish with varnish as it doesn't look so good with a brush or am I doing it wrong
Thanks

I agree with all of the above for the preparation, without prep, you will be wasting time and effort.
You could try a foam roller from b and q this gives a pretty good finish.
Read some of the `paint your van for £50' thread, for tips and techniques, (don't read it all though, it's longer than Ẁar and Peace', but essential reading for those intended on re finishing their vans)
cheers
