im in the process of changing my 1.6 cs to 1.9 1y.first of i was going to fit the 1.9 clutch then i found it was totally diferant so am fitting a new 1.6 clutch. Then i noticed the old cs engine has a needle bearing in the crank shaft, but not fitted to the 1y engine, have ordered the bearing from vw but not fitted yet,has anyone come across this before?do i really need it. also the old oil filler pipe which conects to the sump is leaking at the base, cant get a new one from vw so was thinking about blanking it of at the sump and using the 1y filler cap on the rocker cover, and 1y dip stick is this ok to do..any other tips greatfully received..
cheers ..gaz
ps. is the cs exhaust ok

Whether spigot bearings are required is down to the gearboxes and not the engines, all t3 gearboxes need a spigot bearing.

If you can keep the oil filler tube and the dipstick located behind the number plate flap it will save you much unloading to get into engine bay just to check/top up oil...

Try CJ for one of those filler pipes.. make sure you calibrate the dipstick when you first fill the engine with oil (4.5 litres without oil cooler), in the normal JX position, you may need to shorten the diptsick tube itself an inch or two (see Wiki)

Going good then, like they should
MIG the oil filler tube up? Can't be thaat bad? Or if it's the flange then face both surfaces off and apply new gasket with goo of choice.
