Hi Folks,

My gearshift seems to have gone a bit sloppy recently. Whereas I could once change gear without sandwiching my fingers between gearstick and dashboard, now I no longer can!

I've been told its probably worn bushes? If it is, can they be replaced and more importantly could someone give me a clue as to what I need to buy?

Not sure if this is any help, but changed the gearlinkage bushes on my MK1 golf and cant imagine they are to different.
I bought a gear linkage kit of ebay had everything I needed,
Just followed the Haynes Manual, bit of a messy job but fairley simple.

A gear linkage kit would be ace, but I can't seem to find one (or more accurately don't know where to look!)

Have a look under neath first, you may find its a simple as doing up the pinch bolt on the centre UJ or the bush mounting plate on the gearbox...

But simon has most parts on the shelf..

vw still stock em, real easy job. recently done em on my bus. kit was around thirty quid. dont buy their special grease tho its thirty quid on its own!!! use normal grease!!!

Changed front and rear bushes on mine and it made huge diffence, easy job to do and parts available from VW or JustKampers check the shift rod for signs of excessive play. Whilst it was in bits replaced rear bellows and well greased cup and ball joint on the gearbox. we now change gear rather than wrestle!

Its also worth checking the pinch bolt, slightest movement will "cock" things up!

Just to let everyone know, I had to change my rear gear selector bushes on my type 2 t3 campervan and cost me 50 quid in all (I got the bits from Just Kampers). I got the CV grease for the moving parts of the gearshift linkages from Halfords.

The boots on the rear gearshift linkage were knackered and the nylon bush on the bracket was also badly worn. This in all took me just over a couple of hours to replace (most of that time was trying to get the old bracket off).

The CV grease its self is actually the correct grease for those parts (it contains molybedium disulphide aka MoS2) and my VW booklet mentions that MoS2 grease should be used on all moving parts of the gearshift linkages.

Another point also to note is that VW mentions that you should use VW's D6 locking compound on the nut which secures the bracket onto the gear selector rod on the gearbox its self. This is actually blue locktite 242.
