how hot should engine get without thermostat ?

i took out the termostat from my engine as i suspected it may be duff.
the engine takes a lot longer to warm up now, but its still goes up to half when sitting in traffic and the fan cuts in, this was on a really hot day.
would this happen with the thermostat taken out or should the engine run a lot cooler even when sitting in traffic?

once then engine is warm it should be fully open what was it like before is the main thing ????? i run my van without a thermostat but i have to lol

i can't really see what the problem is. it gets warm in traffic and the fan cuts in to cool it down? int that how it's supposed to work.
at least you know your fan works

agree with him ^.
Sounds like its working as designed. The thermostat is there to enable the engine to get up to working temperature with a smaller volume of coolant. Once the engine is at working temp the thermostat opens and the rest of the coolant is introduced. Without the thermostat you just have the larger volume to warm up and therefore your engine takes longer to get up to working temperature.

I had issues with mine, removed the thermostat and it was still overheating it just took longer. I think the key is if all is working properly then they get hot and then the fan cools it back down again or airflow when moving.

When traveling at "speed" the engine will be running too cold especially in the winter.. for the fan to cut in another possible problem could exist.. the fan normally take a bloomin long time to cut in even when sitting in traffic after a motorway run..
Could be tha the rad is partially blocked and this is acting as restriction allowing it to heat up quicker..
