When replacing my fuel tank last week, the metal ring that goes on the filler neck at the top was broken. Just ordered a replacement from VW, how easy are these to fit?

There are two. One you can see when you take the filler cap off which the 3 screws go through and one you can't see which is on the other side of panel. This is probably the one that's broken on yours due to crud and corrosion?
They're easy enough to change but get 3 new screws as well and take note that the holes for the two rings have to line up as they're offset so you have a 1 in 3 chance of getting it wrong!
The outer ring is ok as there's writing on it so rotate it so it's the right way up to read (petrol/diesel) then offer up inner ring to the correct holes and mark it in some way so it lines up when you fit it.
The screws will also go through the plastic filler housing and the rubber filler neck so it's quite a sandwich!
Use a good screwdriver and adrop of oil as lube when you fit screws as I found they were very tight as they went into the new inner metal ring.
Don't forget to jubilee clip or ty-rap the rubber neck to the plastic filler tube.

One of the few DIY jobs that I've started AND finished in recent years!! So must be pretty straightforward compared to the ones that I start and then have a "little" sabbatical from to think about (for several months)!! From what I can remember about doing it though, Brookie's advice above sounds pretty much spot on!
