Hi all,

Im trying to order springs and shocks from halfords, and they say they need more info than the year and modle ('81 2lt a/c). has anyone ordered from here or using spax parts?

Why use Halfraud's, why not go to Just Kampers or similar where they know what they are talking about

going there as they sell spax, which are better that the non discript ones that JK sell, theyre also local.

What kit to get?

Loads of choice out there now, not like a few years ago, the Germans are the masters of doing things right, do you see them going lower than 60mm? nope.

H&R springs, probably the best available, quite expensive, you get what you pay for!

Sachs, again not the cheapest but good.

JK (Just Kampers) Not sure who makes their springs, shockers by ALKO, bit more heavy duty than stock, kit works well.

Koni shock absorbers, respected and loved in Germany

Bilstien shock absorbers, Expensive, standard shocks are good, their sport shockers are very stiff indeed!

G-max, great budget kit but for the price your better spending that little extra and getting something a little better.

Spax, UK made, available from Halfords of all places, they work well.

AVO, my favorite, I would say that as I sell them! 45mm and 60mm drops available, 22 point adjustable shockers let you tailor the ride to your own tastes, come with poly bushes. Best compromise for features and cost.

ive used adjustable spax shockers on my race mini they were good , ive used standard spax shockers on various vehicles and to be honest they are more expensive and no better than any other run of the mill shockers get a set of 4 heavy duty ones from just kampers at a ton , i dont think you,ll beat that, had a set on my van for a while now with no problems...

ive had a look at the spax site, theyre a more than i thought. looking at it, maybe if i had a high performance car or something more worthy.. ...

Thinking of 60mm, and hoping for the best in relation to the wheels fitting between the suspention and the arch.

Well tom I hope you find what you want (and I would recommend Baxter) posting your question has saved you some money at least

JK do Alko heavy-duty shocks, just fitted some, ALKO are a decent firm for suspension components ets, or see Simon at Brockworks for Jamex or AVO kits, he does know what he`s talking about when it comes to suspension fiting etc.

Not strictly true.

AVO have no spring manufacturer at the moment as the company that did supply them have gone breasticles up.
So, they have been left in the lurch without specs of what they had, so they are having to start a fresh.
AVO have my stock of standard springs and are working on some new springs that will hopefully do what they say on the tin.
Springs are in production as I type this and will be ready within a month pending yours truly trialling a set on his Westy.

Spax, decent springs, not used or fitted dampers so can't comment.

I can supply jamex, but the UK importer is out of stock (again) so there is a shortage on that front too. For the price, the jamex kit is good, but at the end of the day it's £200, and you generally do get what you pay for.

The Jamex is exactly the same as the G-max kit which is sold for up to £400 in places (I sell this kit at £200!!)

I have Bilstien shock absorbers on the shelf, Bilstien shockers on the shelf (as an alternative to the standard dampers, but gas and uprated over stock, these are a very, very good damper.

I would not lower a camper by springs that are advertised as 60mm as they are designed for lighter vans, if you lower your van by 60mm you will be in for trouble and the reality is it will lower the van by much more.

-45mm springs for campers, -60mm springs for panel vans and puick ups that don't do any work.
