Hi folks

I have a noise whilst driving that sounds like unreleased brakes, a sort of metal on metal sound. It's coming from under the front of the cab..

Is this usual?, iv'e had Rover cars in the past that had a similar sound from the transmission, but as a noob to T25's i'm worried.

Can anyone shed any light?

Siezed/sticking brake caliper(s) on the front disc brakes?

Apart from the usual 'Air Cooled Clatter'' from the engine & a bit of noise from the transmission you may (will?) get creaking from the furniture in a 25+ year old camper. (Assuming that you have a camper & not a panel van etc). You may also get whirring noises from behind the dashboard from various sources including the speedo cable.

Basically, the the potential sources of unusual noise on a T25 are multitudinous.

I think that the term ''Air Cooled Clatter' sums up the noise of a VW a/c engine perfectly. The water boxer is marginally quieter because it has that new fangled water jacket thing to deaden some of the sound.

The top control arm bushes 'creak' or 'squeak' when they need changing, over humps and bumps, ends up driving you mad... right underneath you of course

Check that the front brake disks back plates are not touching a disk.

wheel bearings worn?? CHeck the play in each front wheel.

If the vehicle has been standing for some time it is possible that some flakes of rust from the rim if the brake discs have become lodged in the caliper. This can cause a very worrying noise.

Could just be a stone caught in the splash plate....

does the noise dissappear as soon as you press the brake pedal? if so i think you'll find you're driving my 2.0l Aircooled
i'll tek a look at mine at the tech weekend if i feel like it. i reckon the calipers want freeing off a bit.
mine seemed to mek funny noises when i got it,, and it still does if you compare it to anything else i've driven but being Aircooled i'm sure it's all just normal.
mine wouldn't idle when i got it but i soon sorted it with new plug leads,, vacuum hoses,, plugs and points and now its ace.
theres a fancy idle device that gives trouble as well i think and most folk seem to just disconnect it and plug the wires together.
all good fun.

or quite simply its time for some new brake pads....
