Going to jack the van up and try and work out where the smell is coming from.

Where are the most comon places to check?

I know the tanks rust on the top and with the state of my van i'll look there 1st

Where else? can only be the flexy bits i guess...

One extra point, when i did the rusty drivers seat belt point i had the expansion tank off. I rejoined the 2 flexys at the bottom but couldn't work out where the top one went. Where should it go?

You've answered your own question really. :)

As you said, check the top of the fuel tank. Then check the expansion tanks & all the pipes/connections. The usual suspects in other words. :)

The top one goes no where it has a rubber piece on the end that VAG funnily enough call an end piece part number 321 201 890
I think this is just to stop mud and crap blocking the vent pipe which connects to the "float valve" in the top of the expansion tank.
As for the smell I would check all the flex pipes first also all the joints. If no luck drop the tank and check it for rust, if you have an early van also check the filler pipe which is metal and does rust too. If you have to drop the tank I would suggest that you change all the fuel and breather pipes along with all the seals for piece of mind.

Good Luck

The smell on mine was coming from the rubber flange that connects the filler cap to the filler neck that goes to the tank, if you know what i mean. Easy job to do and cheap as well. Hope you get it sorted.
