Upon giving the timing a check with the strobe..and a general once over
it was noticed that the vacuum pipe rubber connector was a bit perished so after replacing it I sucked the vacuum unit and ....nothing

no movement of the rotor...just the sound of me sucking with no resistance...

this is obviously not right and could explain a remarkable loss in power.

are the vacuum units replaceable even reparable or is it a new distrbutor?

if you do a search on my name within the last few weeks you will see I had more than a leaky pipe - I didn't have a can at all!

Anyway, Simon Baxter (Wagonwerks) put a can in the post in exchange for an email from paypal. It was a bit of a fiddle to fit (dizzy off engine) but not impossible.

good old baxter he has vacuum units on the shelf...phew


just to be certain when sucked, the rotor should move shouldn't it?

Kev, my vac advance was busted until Si fixed it.

Tell-tale difference for me was that the van no longer 'lurches' when pulling off from junctions. It used to set off and then 'die' briefly, but now it does not.
You'll be amazed at the difference when you've fixed it!

As for whether it should move when you suck it, I've not idea. And it's raining here so I won't go and look.

can someone suck their dizzy vac pipe and tell me if the rotor moves?

the plate the trigger magnet is on moves but I don't think the rotor itself does.

ahh yes I see that now thanks...and have dug out that info from the haynes.

so if I can dismantle down to see the pick up then I should see it move under suck

the can fits in the oblong hole. You have an advantage in that you will have one to compare. The lever from the can hooks (eventually) over a peg visible through that hole. If you suck the can the lever pull in and the (black block) magnet moves.

The rotor arm is on the centrifugal weights and spring so has a little rotation.
