Having a bad few weeks, first knocked off my bike by a dog running across the road and me hitting it, then yesterday on the motorway oil light comes on and I have a knocking sound, I found the problem straight away (vacuum generator loose) and oil pressure is now good and the engine runs very well with no difference in power.

Right, its a 1.9 diesel (1Y Engine) for starters, as stated there is a knock present both idleling, underload and offload, it seems to be from one source, my initial thought was one of the small ends has had it.

Pulled off the sump and removed the injectors and she turns over with no knock present, then took off each of the big ends, the bearings look ok and I cannot feel any play evident on the small end between the conrod and gudgeon pin - would I normally be able to feel any play if they were shot?

Took off each of the camshaft journals then and again nothing major evident, the cam lobes themselves look good and each of the followers seem ok, the 1y engine has hydraulic tappets which i'm not too sure about so could one of these be causing the tapping or knocking?

Next thing i'm going to do tomorrow is stick the injectors back in and turn it over with compression and see if that highlights anything.

Anybody got any other suggestions or thoughts?

Here is a few ideas based on my 1.6td JR engine with hydro tappets.The knock could be due to engine timing& pump incorrect.A noisy hydro bucket ie not pumping up this occured on my engine i replaced all .Cost for a set of hydro buckets £58.00 G.S.F + extra for new cambelt .

The knock was only present after the loss of oil pressure and the timing is set smack on and runs very well. (only set the timing a few weeks ago with the DTI in the back of the pump)

If the bucket was at fault, I assume its would not be opening the valve correctly? and would I see a loss in performance?

Okay its not the timing .when i had the clatter and knock with the hydro it made no diffrence to the vans performance.

The first thing i would expect to suffer damage from oil loss are main bearings or big end bearings, small end bearings will last much longer without oil. The most likeley with the head would of been camshaft seizure but thats has not happened if it runs. If you can fault the crank bearings try removing cambelt and checking intermediate shaft turns smoothly. If everything else is ok it will most likely be a broken piston ring.
If its a light tapping and not a proper knock it could be just a lazy hydraulic tappet, it may cure itself.

Further investigation tonight, this is main bearing no3, seems to have picked-up, also the crank itself is scored ...

Right, engine out the weekend and search for a replacement, anyone got one or know of a 1Y up for sale?

Oh well, atleast the bike is back on the road after finding a new rear hanger, footpeg and fairing.

I must find my nail brush also .....

Good picture of the offending item.On fleabay there is a complete TDI engine with loom available service history 90.00 miles engine code AHU buy it now price £350.00 search under T25 newly listed.Just a thought if the rest of the engine is good regrind the crank & set of shells.

I thought of getting new shell bearings etc but then I would only find something else gone later on, so will just replace it and have loads of spares available.

The ebay one is AHU code, means messing around ECU's and turbo's etc, thanks for looking anyway, if you see any more ....
