Fan and wipers problem

I was at the level crossing with vent fan and wipers on. I turned off the engine (and fan / wipers) until the trains had passed then restarted the engine - but no fan or wipers! I have checked the fuses in the main fuse box (inside the glove box), but no burnt out fuses. Where should I look next?

Not sure of your year, but pre-1985 the wipers and fan are fed from the same fuse, so it sounds like it's lost its feed somehow. (If you're sure it hasn't blown.)
If I remember correctly, that fuse is fed from the load-reduction relay. Maybe it got stuck? (You'd probably lose main beam and stuff too if it has though.)
All I can suggest is a good poke and wiggle around the fusebox. Usually gets my van going again!

Thanks, Dan. It is an 83 watercooled. I can't find an obvious broken fuse so maybe it is further back - where is the reduction relay?
Maybe I should get a Haynes manual !

Invest in a cheap meter and trace it back.

The relay is above the fusebox IIRC.
I think the switched feed is black with a yellow stripe...
Is it only the fan and wipers that have stopped, or have you lost something else too?
Have you physically removed the fuses? I tend to find with those ceramic ones, you can get a bad contact at the pointy ends. Could be worth taking the offending fuse out and checking the holder is nice and shiny at both ends.
(My leaky windscreen makes mine go green and furry from time to time!)
