Is there a smart way of doing this? I've just used windscreen washer fluid, result not good so far. Worth another go, or is there some big reason for not using it inside, like not using washing up liquid on the bodywork?

Alternatively, has anyone tried the vinegar method?
I'd prefer not to buy in some overpriced, over-packaged, allergy-inducing, imported-from-the-other-side-of-the-world Special Product unless there's a good reason.

A mate of mine that was a chauffer for a while used to use vinegar and newspaper.

Mr Sheen shines everything clean. A lot less smear than most I've tried. Excellent on bodywork if youve got no wax polish. The vinegar method works very well but your van will stink for a few days, and you'll be dying to eat chips whenever you drive.

The original pink Windolene used to work very well...
or just use the cheap and cheerful supermarket stuff.. and plenty of paper towel

Window spirit leaves no smears or wax..not cheap though at 4.99 a bottle

turtle wax do it aswell...one wipe and its done.

White (clear) vinegar does the trick the same as the brown stuff, and doesn't ming as much, just a lot!

T cut clears lots of marks, followed by vinegar to remove the waxy residue, plenty of kitchen roll and elbow, clearer than Nun's thoughts.

we also used standard window cleaner and news paper for some reason always did a good job when we worked in the pubs

Whether it's vinegar, or 'proper' stuff, if you don't use clean paper towel (kitchen roll) then you'll always end up with some kind of smearing!

Active ingrdient...vinegar. That and news paper... end of life use too!

I've got some white vinegar for me bathroom mirror. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Interesting about the newspaper tip - I'd forgotten, but I've heard it several times before. I'll try one half newspaper, one half the usual kitchen paper.

Any ideas why windscreen cleaner fluid doesn't work? It was pretty filthy, maybe I'll run a three-way trial.

use water with a splash of fairy,wipe with a cotton rag and then buff with window cleaners scrim, lasts for weeks smear free and doesnt fog up...

This is the easiest and best way. (I was a window cleaner for 8 years, trust me)
