Hello,

88E 1.6 turbo diesel (JX) panel van, 5 speed, 162k miles.

I have just solved the problem of a leaking injector pipe, which was (I thought) brought to my attention by a noise (like a "phut phut" noise) every 4th cycle (i.e. only affecting 1 cylinder) when putting down the power.

The leaky injector pipe problem is now solved, but the noise is still there.

symptoms:
"phut phut phut" sound
only affecting 1 cylinder
only when putting power down (not when coasting or cruising steadily)
not engine speed specific (i.e. if I put my foot down at any revs, it will make this noise)
no loss of power

I had the exhaust changed in June, and as it is only affecting 1 cylinder I don't think it is the main part of the exhaust (after the manifold).

Any ideas?

Sounds like a leaking manifold gasket, which is fairly common on the JX. Bring it roun d some time and we'll have a look at it, maybe even poke it with a stick.....

Is it a serious thing (will it mean it will get worse and break anything else) or can I just "live with it" until the new year?

Would like to pop round sometime (after new year) and poke it with a big stick, PM me your details.

Is it an expensive/hard job to fix? When I got the exhaust done I was told that the exhaust to turbo studs were very corroded.

If its the exhaust manifold gaskets it tends to be the one nearest to the the turbo that blows as there a 4 indivuidual ones. It might be worth replacing the studs on the turbo, though it's possible leave the turbo in place and remove the manifold enough to change the gaskets, just more gynaecological skills are required.

I had fun with my 1.9d - the nuts that held the exhaust to the block kept disappearing, found out there was no gasket and it kept rattling the nuts off - ooerr missus

if it needs doing I will get the garage to do it, as it is my van for work I can't afford to get it half done at home and then not be able to finish the job. I need to take it in in the morning, and pick it up done in the evening. Tax deductible motoring expense too!!!

I will get him to do studs too at the same time, and change the coolant.

DH is offering a good service mate, not the most tricky of jobs, justa crawl under the van . He has enought kit to do the job and is very familiar with them.

No I'm not and no I don't. I'm useless and I have a 13mm spanner in my garage, is all......

not much help now , but may be, I loosen and retighten the exhaust nuts to th eturbo every year, use a copper lubricant on them. just so when it's time to change exhaust they will come off without snapping.
some after market exhaust are not good fit to turbo and this cause leak like you describe. Been there etc.

I have sorted the noise (kind of!)

I fitted a new stereo (JVC CD tuner) and some JBL 5.25 inch speakers in the front doors. Now I can't hear any engine noise when I drive! I had some rubbish Audioline stereo fitted before as well as 4 inch speakers which the rubber had gone, so they were absolutely rubbish. Now you can hear the classic sounds of early 90s dance from the next street!
