I have the standard 185 R 14 tyres on the camper, what is the profile of these ?, I am looking at putting on alloys and to keep the same diameter I would need to know the profile, any help most welcome, cheers,

origionally the profile was 82 but I would think your tyres are probably closer to 70 as 82's are hard to find

have a look at the Wiki, 'recommended tyres' stuff, it explains size comparisons, effects on speedo reading, etc.

I did look on Wiki but did not know the profile of the tyres on my van as they ony say 185 r 14 c,

They will be the '82' profile. Basically if it doesn't say then it's 82.

any tyre without a "profile" marking will be an 82 profile, but comonly refered to "80".

The diameter of a 185 r 14 is 650mm (depending on manufacturer) so stick close to that and you should be ok.. but check the load rating as if you have a heavy camper an ordinary car tyre may not be able to carry the weight..

going slightly off the subject, but not far, one of the wiki tyre recommendation pages states that with steel wheels, although the std. size is 185-14, its ok to use 195/75 14, or 205/70 14, is it then ok to use 195/75 14 tyres on my 6.0'' wide carat alloys?, as there seems to be more brand choice at this size than the std. 205/70 14. which are currently on it.

Good point, about the insurance Toomanytoys,
noticed that TOYO make a 205R14 tyre, 109/107 load index, 'S' speed rated, but dont know what the section height is!
only other brands i can find are GT, MAXXIS, NEXEN, all of which are budget brands, the reply from an e-mail to an online tyre specialist said no other brands he deals with have the required load rating.
will try to find out if the Toyo H08's mentioned above have the right height, as they're a quality japanese brand, i'm told. sent a couple more e-mail enquiries.

unfortunately, section height, aspect ratio, whatever, is 80 on a 205R14, not 70, so still looking like yacky chung budget brands or a wheel change are only option.

Just as I said in my prev post, ANY tyre without a "profile" marking is an 80%.......
195/70 are available in modern van rated and are 650mm diameter.. so might be an option.. should have read 195/70-15 (think thats the std size for T4 800)

apologies, toomanytoys, i must have not read that part of your previous thread about 80 being the height if it doesnt say otherwise.

a 'tyre size calculator' on www.tyresave.co.uk says that . . .
205/70R14 overall diam. 643mm
195/75R14 overall diam. 648mm
difference of only 0.78% or 5mm on diam.
this is well within their 2.5% maximum recommended difference in diameters, so after a call to my insurers who seemed happy enough that the 195/75's will be fine on my 6'' wide alloys, thats what i'm going for, as there is a bit more choice in brands.
Hankooks at 42 quid each or Toyo's at 59 quid look about favourite.
