Hi to everyone

I am very confused now. I checked my engine in my 1989 van and have an engine number of 033 103 021 stamped on the block, with LPH D stamped near it. These numbers do not seem to correspond with the way numbers are in the manual. Also I had a look at the gearbox (which needs replacing) which has the numbers ALD 30 039 stamped on the underside, again this does not seem to tally with the format I was expecting.

Can anyone identify these components? I was told that the engine was a replacement 1.6 diesel (NA) for a turbo engine, the VIN is WV2ZZZ25ZKH095706, which tells me that it is a German made VW multi purpose vehicle, body type 3 door camper, 1983-92 Vanagon/Transporter, made in 1989 in Hanover. The engine type is Z (can't find what this means). There is also a Westfalia plate on the inside, which was presumably the fit-out for the original purpose of the van for German Telecoms.

Any helpp in identifying what I have, with a view to what I need as to a new gearbox would be greatly appreciated.

The previous owner is of little to no help, he seems very vague on the details.

Just browsing through the Brickyard and I notice that there is a 5-speed box available for the 1.7D.

Is it just a straight swap between the gearboxes (ALD to ASP)? Bolt off old (damaged), bolt on new (possibly improved)?

The ratios are:-

ALD 1st 3,78; 2nd 2,06; 3rd 1,23;4th 0,85; Rev 3,67; Final Drive 5,5

ASP 1st 4,11; 2nd 2,13; 3rd 1,476; 4th 1,023; 5th 0,816; Rev 3,67; Final Drive 5,5

Would this then mess up my speedometer? If so is it easy enough to recallibrate, or do I just replace with one from a diesel 1.7 5 speed?

Speedometer drive is taken off the near side front wheel .Changing gearbox ratios has no effect on the reading.5 speed gearbox is longer requiring diffrent gearbox mounting and rods to change gear.I run a 1.6td with a DK code gearbox taken off a 2ltr aircool.Gear ratios are higher but i have no trouble with it pulling or hills.
