Any one know what the difference is between a sarter motor for Aircooled and watercooled ? What I want to know is would a Aircooled one fit on a watercooled? I know the part numbers are different but is the part?

i'm faily sure that there is no difference, only age....
VW are clever with part no's, but not that clever that they can predict the future....

down at my local motor factors the starter motors were listed as 80-86 and then 86-91, guess the tricky bit is the changeover on the '86 plates where it causes problems, are they doing it on the actual time of manufacture or the reg plate?.

Recently replaced the clutch / drive on my own 1.9 w/c DG starter then refitted a recon to my brother in law's A reg 1.9 a/c (don't know engine code. )
The removal/refitting process for them both was so similar I'm almost sure they are identical but reluctant to swear to it without measurements. Looking at it analytically, there was no significant difference in shape, length or design. It bolted on at the same angle and projected backwards by the same amount. Long through-bolt at top with 17mm nut engine-side I think and and fixed stud at bottom with 14mm? nut on gearbox side. I had a distinct feeling when fitting the latter that this was the same as the former. The shaft and pinion set up looked the same, as did the terminal connections.
Why don't we keep those part numbers we scribble down when getting quotes? As for torque, inductance etc not sure but imagine they'd need to be comparable
Hope this helps
