I am in the process of renewing the rear brakes on my van, i have done one side and thought i would bleed them as i went around.

I got my lad to pump the peddle and i was on nipple duty, the first couple of openings released a small stream of bubbles into the jar but then he told me it was too hard to push down, at this stage i could feel the brake shoes gripping and releasing on the drum, i went to the front and tried to pump the peddle and it was indeed firm but the nipple was undone!! i then took the bleed nipple completely out but still no fluid was being passed through. I have also bought new flexi hoses and will replace those tonight in case they have collasped but has anyone got any other idea's as to what it could be? Could there be a problem with the 'bias' valve that i have read about?

Could be a blockage in the piston. If pistons are old I would replace them whilst working on that area anyway. Have you removed pipe from piston and pumped the brake pedal? that will show you whether or not the fluid is getting pushed down the brake line.

If the brake shoes are pressing on the drum it would indicate a lump of debris blocking the bleed hole..

I would fit new wheel cyls if they look old.. smetimes its just easier and if you use new fluid and new parts, the seals will prob go in a couple of months so you would be in there again.. and could be into another set of shoes...
