2.1 DJ thermostat housing temp sensors.

I'll try and make a long story short.

There are two temp sensors in the thermostat housing of my DJ.
Engine would not restart after a short idle and was massively over-fuelling and sooting up the plugs.
I checked the resistance of the sensors, one appeared OK, the other was almost zero resistance (short-circuit).
I swapped the connections on the temp sensors so the injection was using the one which appeared OK and the engine ran without too many problems.
The temp gauge however went straight to the top when ignition switched on and then fell swiftly once running until it was right at the bottom.

It looks to me as though one is definitely broken, which leads to my question......

I had to go to the VW dealers for a hose so asked about the sensors and there were about six different ones listed. Just Kampers website has just the one.

Are they the same and I can use the £5 JK ones for both positions or do I need to get specific ones from VW for £15 each (if I can work out which ones I need)?

A bit more research done now.

After checking GSF a lot have the same part number so it looks like there are two different ones.

93493 TEMP.SENSOR-2 PIN BLK/GRN T25 1.9 / 2.1 Water Cooled 8/87 > 11/90
93494A TEMP.SENSOR-2 PIN BLUE T25 2.1 8/85 > 11/90 2 Pin Blue

So, a revised question;

Which is the sensor for the injection and which for the temp gauge? I took both out a long time ago so don't know which went where.

brooklands manual shows the one on the left of the housing [when viewed from rear of vehicle] is the one to do with the fuel injection, the harder to get at rear one is the temp gauge sender, think the inj. one is blue on my 2.1 DJ, sorry but dont know if the two can be interchanged.

Thanks for that. I will replace both anyway. I needed to know which way round they went.

hope you manage to sort it mate, also, when i replaced my housing [the plastic had a crack in it on the old un] the 'o' rings around temp. senders seemed to have grown and were impossible to cram back in and needed replacing, but that could just be my bad luck! :)

BLUE

Open circuit (5k~7k ohms) when cold (0 C) - 1000 ohms at 50C; 200 ohms at 95C

Its just as often broken wiring or bad connections from that sensor, but change it anyway if in doubt...

I got a blue one and a black one from GSF.

Have replaced both and made sure I got the wires on the correct ones. injection and gauge appear to be working OK (although the gauge only rose slowly, I'll check it again once I've bled the system properly).

Thanks for the help.
