1.6 TD oil pipes

It must be catching. my pipe from the block to the turbo fractured today empting lots of oil up the back of the camper and getting me oil light to flash. Fortunately only did a little distance before pullng over and had to get relayed home.

Funny thing is, my brakes have gone rock soild too !!!!!. Is there a connection between the leak / obvious loss of pressure and the brakes / servo ???. The pipe is easy to unbolt at the turbo end with a pair of 17mm spanners.

Not unless the vac pump on the engine driven by the oil pump shaft has packed up - that would make the brake pedal lose its servo power.

Did you lose all the oil, for long?

Check that there is vacuum from the vac pump outlet barb, they can and do pack up, I've heard.

so if the vac pump has packed up, where is it, are they easy to replace ?.

Where the dizzie normally goes, to rear of engine, a cylindrical thing with a 1/2" bore (ish) reinforced vacuum pipe coming off it.. IPump side of engine - basically straight back on the top of engine

PS. I didn't say it had packed up, I said think along those lines...

cheers for the advice. im kinda hoping ill refit the oil feed, fire it up and the vacuum etc will be restored to normal. Wait n see tho. :shock:

One thing, I have a pocket mechanic manual and its ok re the engine but not very detailed and deoant explain how things work. Any suggestions as to where to source better info.

No, most manuals tell you how things are, and what to do, but not how they work...

pipe replaced by a rather nice flexi hose with new ends for the princley sum of £10. Much better than VW who said it was £18 and not available until May25th !!!!.

Fittted up and brakes cured themselves, or seem to have done so. Must have been summat to do with the loss of oil prrssure etc effecting the vac pump.

No the brakes didnt cure themselves...

the vac pump supplies the vacuum for the servo, but only when the engine is running, when you press the brakes a few times without the engine running, you "use" what vacuum was retained and then are braking only with the direct pressure from your foot.. this is normal on just about any vehicle (but not all), be it petrol or diesel...

when you start the engine vacuum is restored..

yes, i am enlightened, thankyou. But........when i'd parked i had to restart the engine to move it 20 yards or so. while the engine was ticking over i gently (very low and minimal revs mind) moved the van. When i braked the brakes were solid and hardly working. Would this be because i hadnt provided enough reves to build up the pressure in the servo so that it worked ??. Im guessing it is. thanks again. Tony
