Burnt valve.

I suspect the ratvan that I just bought has got a burnt valve, I'm going to compression test it this week to see which side its on and then remove the head to replace the valve.
Does anyone have and handy hints or tips for doing this with the engine in place? Can it be done with the engine in place?
Thanks.

Lot lot easier with engine out and easy to remove with an Aircooled. You'll cuss something rotten trying to work in a tight space. Pull the engine out - you can see what you're doing then.

Have compression tested engine, RH side reading 8 to 8 1/2 bar, LH side nowt.
Started pulling the engine out.
Whats the chances of the engine itself (rather than just the valves) being damaged? Knocking etc.
Wondering whether to replace valves or just change some seals on another engine I have (untested) and fit that?
