The 240v heating element for the electrolux fridge in me Westy has died and i've no idea where to begin looking for a spare. Is this the sort of thing that caravaning places sell or am i looking at some sort of specialist shop?

The fridge is an Electrolux RM184 EGI. I think it's the standard Westy one.

I've just seen one on Mr Gunzl's website so they're obviously still available. Trouble is that i was hoping to be able to get this all sorted in the next few days and ordering from Germany might take longer. Anyone know if these things are standard parts or are they fridge specific?

Take a battery charger and use that to run the 12 volt side?
Just an idea

Dave, you are right, Peter Gunzl has the correct OE ones, BUT I`m sure they are still available from VW, I got one from Gunzle and it came in a modern VW/Audi bag, and they are still listed on ETOS as being available so your local dealer should be able to sort it.
I will suss out the part number from the bag asap and let you know.

A caravan repair place should do the job--they can normally get Electrolux parts ok--

Dave, part number is
255 070 508 D
it`s an Electrolux part in a Westy bag with a VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda label so I am guessing it`s pretty recent from a main dealer, not old stock. Worth a try at your local VW man.

Will try that tomorrow. Much appreciated.
While i had the fridge out i had a go "turbo charging" it by adding fans in various places. I'll post some pics if the results are positive....

Dave, did you see much difference with the new fans on the fridge. Got to put a new 240 element in mine, so might add them while it's out. Works Ok on gas and 12v, just never gets really cold - certainly no ice.
Thanks
