Hi all,

Probably known by many people but found out for myself last week.

1.6 n/a D 1981

When i got my van it had an extra air box device that was hidden in one of the back cubby holes. I decided to put it on when driving the some 300 miles back to kent for easter.

The bit i am reffering to is a cylinder shapped box that fixes on to the end of the air filter box and connects to a pipe comming in from the vent on the left side of the van. Sitting behind the rear left light cluster.

I put it back on and was ammazed at the noise diffrence, the drone had gone and there was very little noise at tick over. So i headed on my way. Now as anybody who has gone or lived in cornwall knows, there is a big F off set of hills on the A30 heading for Bodmin. Normally the van would get up all of them at a minimum of 40mph ish lol. With the air box extra it struggled to get up at 20mph in secound

So i stoped wipped the air box extra thing of, lived with the drone and got flying again!

So i would say if its there on your van wip it of and see if it makes any diffrence to power and noise. fuel consumption?

Just worth a try cause 5hp increase on a 50hp engine is a big deal!!!

The problem is it sucks up dirty dusty air from the road and kills your air filter.
The reason its like that is to collect nice clean moving air which has lower pressure and therefore is easier to suck in..
Mine is off at the moment due to the oval corrugated pipe being crushed.
The noise drives me mad as its sooooo much noisier.
If you want to sell your pipe I'll take it off your hands.

Good point maybe a new air filter is needed, lucky i got some tin wear to stop some of that muck getting in the air filter.

I was thinking allong the same lines, that putting it on would increase the power not reduce it as like u said it should suck it in easier as its basicaly being ramed in.

But who knows

can you grab that oval pipe from a motor factors maybe?

My diesel conversion never had one of these, someone told me that yes, fitting it would increase power. I'd be interested to hear if anyone has any science on this...

the 1.6 diesel motor is far too weak to carry the weight of the van, whoever thought it a good idea to put it into a t3 really should have been sacked and made to sweep the streets for a living. my old engine was a 1.6d until i fitted a 1.9d 1y, what a relief we no longer get mopeds overtaking us

lhd ask someone who's gone lpg for the pipe, gave mine to my brother as his had the foam falling off the wire, the petrol one is solid plastic but fits.

as like u said it should suck it in easier as its basicaly being ramed in.

No Ram effect at all I'm afraid, but just colder air hopefully which can make a deal of difference c.f. hot engine bay air.

I imagine its some sort of anti-phase resonator plenum chamber (:roll: ) which might do a bit more than just quieten things down and collect cold air - might. I wouldn't have thought VW would have fitted it if it reduced power by more than a smidgen, but they have to meet noise requirements of course, so a small sacrifice would be made. Lots of cars have a similar plenum before the filter box, often under the front wing.

Definitely check that air filter and the pipes for blockage/crushing if it knocked that much performance off - the JX air-filter might be better to fit if its any different, having to cope with much larger airflows.
