Been thinking about heaters this weekend. How good are they? I've never really been that bothered, but now that we have little summer i'm wondering whether they might be of use from time to time. Normally we would just get hookup when we need a heater, but this weekend we couldn't find a site with hookup so couldn't take summer away with us. Had we had a heater this might not have been a problem....
I know you can get the eberspacher and the propex, but i'm wondering just how good they are. Do they really warm up the van?
what are we looking at in terms of cost and which do you think is best? Does one take up more space than another? Are they safe or is it something that a baby/ toddler (soon!) could burn themselves on?

yeah, the smoking thing puts me off a bit though... got to be ultra safe with little summer in there. where do you get these things serviced? Caravan places do em?

I've always been a bit concerned about Ebers, the one in my old Westy worked really well, but you need the engine running for a few minutes or be on hook up to give it enough juice to fire up properly, but once it did it was roasty toasty.

You can get them serviced at your local Eber specialist

ebbers are very safe , you could give George a shout , he did say he was getting a few in

once you get an ebber you can go away anytime and anywere. lots of sites ive been on especially in the lakes have the best plots were there is no electric. the first year i went to dubfreeze it was -4 and i slept ontop of the covers in my underpants and tshirt

well thats the ebber camp I speak for the propex camp



and quite simply it's fabulous


plus more safety kit than you can shake a stick at ....
runs constant or on thermostat
I'm down to my bra and pants in half an hour (phew!)
butane or LPG available at most campsites

easy to install .....no smells

is propex more expensive than ebbers? ebbers come in petrol and diesel do they? ah interesting you mention smell... do they smell?

i too would fight in the corner of propex! i'm guessing that you would be more concerned with keeping the van at a constant temp all night rather than just when you go to bed and get up, propex is the way, themostatically controlled so it comes on and goes off all on it's own!

they are much cheaper to buy new and come with a 3yr waranty! the only downside of them is that they can cane the gas! we have a refillable bottle which is a bit of an outlay but i only have to fill it one more time and i've broke even! that is just on the outside of a year!

so can ebbers dave. ether way proper heating rocks whether its a propex or an ebber.

''Controlability'' that was the word to sum up gas heating, wasn't it? Well it applies perfectly to Propex heaters. Disco's right though, they do cane the gas!

diesel ebber s are just as controlable as propex , a bit darer to buy , but loads cheaper to run , and can be used when moving , have all the same safety features and keep the van toast warm (thats cooked bread to anyone with a westy )
only poor installations have trouble with battery low voltage meaning you need to run engine as owen said , or duff battery - and propex suffer exactly the same its a safety feature to ensure that you dont complely drain your battery .

I have no problems starting my thermostaticaly controlled eber and thats on a small car battery under the drivers seat.Also you barely notice the fuel at .25 of a litre an hour (25p) especially as it comes out of your fuel tank.

we've been here before! you can use propex whilst moving too! same with the fridge and oven!
