Ok, at long last im on the road with my crewcab, I wont bore you all with the results of my overheating saga, but just to say, with a new cyl head im sorted! However ive got one minor problem, alls ok starting even on these cold damp mornings, glow plugs on, flick the key and away it goes........but its runing 'lumpy' and smokey until it warms up, then its clear as a bell, now I did have this problem intermittantly before my 'head job' and I believe that the glow plugs should carry on glowing until the engine gets warm, any ideas or where I should start to look for the problem, is there a seperate relay for the secondary glow?

you need to operate the cold start handle,this pulls the lever on the side of the pump and advances the pump to make it run sweet from cold,cj.

That'll be the one thats been broken off then CJ. Got any over at Syncrospares head office?

yes some here,you have to remove pump to fit so bit of a cufuffle,cj.

or is it just the pully out plastic handle bit that is broke off.this is just held on with a clip..

You DON'T need to remove the injector to change the cold start cable. A torch, a screwdriver and a small quantity of patience is all that is needed.

I've done many of them like this.

A ha yes its just the end off the plastic knob/handle thats gone, im left with a bit that I cant grip to pull out.

One word: Molegrips!

if you look there should be a metal band around the bit thats left.flip this off and replace with a new pully out bit.still available from your local vw dealership.i got one about 2 months ago....

souded like the lever on the pump was damaged,but lucky this is not the case afterall.
