Has anybody got a definate diagnosis for oil in coolant water in diesel engines? When I got this aaz from the breakers yard there was evidence of oil in the coolant hoses(it was in a vw jetta but rad missing) I pressure tested the oil cooler and no fault found. Put engine in and no evidence of the same, until after the Coney Farm antics/ journey .Have flushed out and seems ok at the moment.Could it be somthing else/ Any ideas otherwise I shall change oil cooler.

Oil coolers are more common than head gaskets. What year is the AAZ? Late ones have a better head gasket.

It`s a 1993 as far as I can tell. Ive seen this before on a Passat td and syncro pete ( my son) had it on a golf petrol ( i think) engine. He replaced the cooler with a new vag one,40 quid, and that sorted it. it seems odd that it`s intermittant and pressure testing the water jacket with air to 80 psi does`nt show anything.

If it's intermittent, it's not likely to be the head gasket. Especially if you've been doing some mileage with the problem, it would have failed badly by now..

The head gasket can have slight mixing of oil and water, and do it for a long time withou gettig worse, the later metal gasket sorted this. Whats the engine no after AAZ.

I stand corrected, I was thinking of a leak between the chamber & waterways, not oil & water, D'oh!
