Gearbox no 5th

Problem with my gearbox, it pried out of 5th on the motorway, felt judery , it won’t stay in 5th even trying to hold it in. I have had a few issues previously with it feeling stuck in 5th.
My gut says the gearbox is broken and needs a replacement, it’s my daily driver so need it sorting quick as.
The gearbox case has a hole at the front which makes me wonder whether it’s worth rebuilding it.
Just after advice around options
Which codes of gearbox codes to buy second hand
Costs of rebuild etc
Is there anything that can be fixed at home

Thanks in advance

There's a used 3H gearbox on Ebay which might sort you out, or there was a day or so ago, it was fair money for no guarantee unknown condition (if true)
Hole in the end case, and I assume some loss of lube could well mean terminal damage likely that things might have worn to the point of friction welding together. You'd be looking at up to a couple of hundred just to strip the box and find it beyond economic repair. End case alone is around £500 for a new one plus another £100 for the two bearings to go in it.
You can also use a ABN or similar gearbox from a 1.9 petrol and swap over the bellhousing and input shaft to fit a diesel, internally they are the same box.

Thanks Aiden that’s really useful.
I filled the gap with chemical metal, but it may have corroded more since I guess.
it sounds like another second hand gearbox wouldn’t be a bad idea regardless if the costs of the case are high and other parts may be fused.
I will check the level to see if that’s likely.
What are your lead times at the minute and approximate costs, I know you won’t know for sure until you look.

Carried on driving not using 4th and it’s totally done now, had to limp home, can see some oil seeping from the bell housing
