Ignition barrel not returning key

Hi all. Got an issue with my ignition at the mo. When I turn the key the van starts but the key remains in the final ignition spot and needs to be returned manually rather than doing it automatically. A few days ago the wipers and washers wouldn't work but have been fine since. Is this likely to be an ignition switch problem - my first thought as it makes sense of the wipers not working - or a barrel problem as the key won't return?
Thanks for any help.

The spring return is in the switch , so I would start with that

Cheers. That would also tally with the wiper issue the other day. Thanks for your help.

Ignition switch.
easy to replace.
The plastic collar on the column - ignition switch housing bearing will probably disintegrate.
Use a bearing puller to remove the ign switch housing. Dont hit it from behind with a hammer. Its very fragile aluminuim and will break.
A good vid from gowesty on column maintenance in YT.
