Hydraulic Tappet Adjustment

I never really understood hydaulic tappits on the Wasserboxer. I thought you never had to adjust them and if you had the head off or rockers off you could just put everthing back without adjustment.
How I was wrong.
I listened to Jake Raby's excellent podcast on hydraulic followers and found that you had to check and adjust them. once a year.
So I decided to adjust them I backed the adjusters all off and then set them . I followed the procedure by Boston Bob as I understand this supperscedes Bentley/ Haynes which says adjust the tappet till it touches then 2 full turns.
Boston Bob says 1/4 to 1/2 I set to 1/2
The engine now sounds very tappaty
Is Boston Bob right or Bentley
How noisey are wasserboxers tappets
I know too noisy is better than no noise too tight

They are self-adjusting!

Too much lash and they'll fill up a bit to close the gap. Too little and they will drain down (eventually!). What most folks forget is that it takes time for them to sort themselves out. If you're sure you've done the initial setting correctly, take your van out for a 20 minute run. Chances are it will purr like a kitten after that!

I use the 1/2 turn method and works well..

AS said they need to be run for a good 20 mins to clear any air thats got in... (you had the rockers off!!)
it is worth checking them every year or so though.. as any wear taking place in the heads/seats would not show up for a long time...
