Diesel hoses - tank to filter

Fuel tank is in after some persuasion... I've been replacing the cobbles together mess of old connectors and pound shop hose clamps as I go.
I put them on yesterday and already forgot what size - I had mimicked the existing fittings for the diesel fuel and return by putting new fuel hose, about five inches longer, on the bottom inlet and outlet of the tank. They were a nice snug fit on the tank and needed warming but the hard plastic lines don't have any sort of olive or shape to fit snugly inside? I've tightened new fuel hose clamps and they seem secure but should there be a fitting?
I can't test it for leaks yet as the fuel pump and engine are about 10 metres away from the van pending rebuild...
I am considering whether to just run new fuel hose straight from the tank inlet and outlet to the filter. Less connections means less potential leaks. Is this a common thing done on these vans? And if so is it the same size, or use of a reducer... Or fitting a different filter with the same size inlet as the hose?
IIRC it's about 12mm outlet and 6mm inlet but I also can't remember having dinner last night so...
