Cutting Out Question

Hi, when I break down, which happens randomly but frequently, the only thing which starts the van again is spraying carb cleaner down the idle jet.

Any idea what's going on here please? Thank you.

fuel pump, filter, pourus lines, fule screen on carb, crud in the tank outlet. the shutoff as you know.

if a sniff of easy start gets it going then your already on the right lines with a fuel issue.

What carb ? If its a 2e3 check the cone  filter in the inlet spigot if you have checked the main ( and should be only) filter by the tank outlet .

Thanks for reply. When I discovered the carb cleaner down the idle jet trick at the roadside was the only thing to get it going again, I thought I was clearing a random persistent blockage. Recently I've been thinking it's acting as easy start as you suggested, thank you. Once when it cut out and wouldn't start again I took the fuel inlet hose off and cranked the starter, it filled a glass in seconds which rules a lot of stuff out. Nevertheless I've changed the fuel pump and checked the push rod, attended to the hoses and tank, changed the three filters, cleaned the carb several times, gone through the ignition components, and so on. Currently my attention is with the cut off solenoid.

3 filters?

Should be one by the tack and the conical screen on the inlet, if you have another its none standard but unlikly to be the culprit.

As per your othe thread, may be worth seaking out a blanking bung to at least rule out the solenoid. it's an easy device to check the general operation on though as you just need to provie 12V to energise it.

Hi, yes both of those filters were clear, but I did change them anyway. Thank you.

The third filter is on the fuel return on the tank, mainly as a hose adapter. I've taken the cut off solenoid off and when testing it on the bench it gives the expected click, as it does on the car. There's more to it than that though of course, the inner rod moves inward to allow fuel to pass through, need another to check if it's functioning correctly to compare as I am dubious. The rubber washer is also showing signs of perishing, not sure what to use to replace that.
