I’ve just measured the pitch at 1mm and the od of the spindle at 17.9.
I’m going for M18x1.

Just done an Internet search is coming up with M18x1.5 pitch could this be incorrect?

This nut on eBay is listed as 18x1 and the one I measured was 1.0 as measured with a thread gauge.

What’s your plans with the spindle? Is it damaged?

Thanks. The nut will go on three turns and no further I don't want to screw it on any further, as I don't want to cause more damage. This is on a factory power steering spindle and they are like hens teeth.

Blimey. Those nuts on ebay are £25
£3.60 from Brickwerks.

Cheap dies are available for around £15, either that or a thread file if you are careful.

If it's just picked up a slight gall, it's probably safer to use a file to clean the visible damage up than running an untested cheapo die down the whole thing.
Doesn't necessarily have to be a thread file - a V shaped needle file will work fine, too. If you colour the whole thread black with a permanent marker (or engineers blue if you're posh) then wind the nut on by hand giving it a few bites at the stiff bit, you'll be able to see fairly clearly what's holding you off
