Replacing late (MV/SS) filler neck with plain one

I'm replacing the fuel tank on my latest purchase, and the filler neck is a bit grim. It's usable ish, but I'd rather replace it while I have it in pieces.
However, its a late MV engined van and the filler neck is permanently fixed onto the plastic tube that goes all the way to the tank, with a narrow neck in it that only allows an unleaded fuel nozzle in.
Does anyone know whether I have to replace the whole assembly, right down to the tank?
I was hoping I could just lop off the top bit, and convert to a traditional (late) style with the rubber top section than attaches with a jubilee clip.
