Head Gasket replacement.

T25 petrol 1.9, 1987.

The garage has just quoted me £1500 exc vat to replace the head gasket, minus any issues they find on the way.

Just wondering how hard a job it is to do myself. I can probably get the engine out (just) and I am not totally stupid on mechanical stuff. What technical problems could I encounter? Is there a presure test to ensure it doesnt leak. Its leaking coolant not into the oil as that looks fine.

Any advice welcome. I dont think the camper is worth too much but will save it if I can. Plus it will have to be a long term project as time isnt in abundance.

Maybe a VW expert in the midlands area anyone know of ?

Also the cylinder for the hydraulic clutch is beginning to give up.

Any advice welcome.

regards,
Chris.

Is it leaking coolant from the waterjackets onto the ground? Does the coolant expand and flow over when blue cap is released? Only try this when engine is stone cold.
I would do compression and oil pressure tests first. That will indicate to you whether just changing the water jackets will suffice or you have a worn out engine.
Has the engine been well cared for, is clean, and the exhaust manifold bolts in good condition?

I’ve used head gasket sealant 3 times , it worked and lasted for years and years on 2 of them and had no effect on the 3rd , better than 50/50
