Hello everyone,
I am brand new to this forum and to my 1979 single cab transporter.  I imported it to me in Canada from Poland.  I am really trying hard to wrap my head around the ignition timing.  It has a Bosch DVDA dist. and a solex 34 pict 4 carb.  The truck has the 1600cc Aircooled CT engine.  I see some posts saying to time at 10 degrees BTDC and some I have read about timing ATDC.  I think these different settings are due to the both vacuum lines on or off?  If anyone out there is willing to make this as simple as possible for me I would appreciate it.  I have a feeling it probably is simple and Im just overcomplicating things.  I have included a few photos for reference if that helps.  Thanks.

Thanks @sarran1955 I have watched many of your videos. Currently the distributor is working as it should. I would just like a little clarity on what the timing should be. I am very new at this and slowly making my way through it. Today I took off the cage over the pulley and managed to find the notch and use a paint pen to mark it. Sadly there is no timing scale on the fan housing and I can’t find one anywhere. There are loads available for the 2.0 engine but none for the 1.6 petrol CT. Does anyone know where to find one? Thanks again for any and all help. I love learning about all this.

I also just noticed there is a little notch or arrow on the plastic cover to the pulley. Maybe that is a timing mark? I just don’t know what that mark indicates. Any input is welcome.

Just thinking things through here. I’m guessing if I line that painted mark on the pulley with the plastic arrow on the cage then that is TDC? Slowly but surely I’m figuring this out. But now how do I mark other spots on the cage?

Thanks to other posts I now believe that tick on the cage is 5 or 6 degrees ATDC? And that’s mark where the engine should be when both vac lines are attached to the carb? So basically at idle? And now my question is the full advance timing and what hose needs to come off and be plugged etc. I suppose TDC will now be just very close to the left of that tick which I can find by taking the spark plug out.
