Engine lid insulation

Hi,

The engine lid on my van is lined with some kind of fibre, which is retained with thin plastic and wire. I guess it's there to protect against fire, but I'm not sure. With time. the plastic has deterioriated and the fibre now falls down so it's probably resting on the engine - bad news for an Aircooled.

Does anyone know what this material is, and has anyone tried refurbishing? If so how and with what material?
Cheers,
Matt

sorry i havent an answer for you, id look for something more modern

Took my lid off and as mine was off to one side took some grinder sparks from what i was working on, ignited and burned, didnt smoulder at all

so yeah id change it with a fireproof solution
