Crack in exhaust..pipe size?

I have a crack in my stainless steel exhaust right near a flange (funny word eh). The joint is rusted through also… so I’m thinking of cutting out about an inch or so from crack and the other side of the join.. then stick a joining pipe between them.. not sure if it’s the right way to go about it but seems to me to be a suitable course of action.. question is.. what size pipe do I need.. I can’t measure it till I cut the old one off but ideally I would have the connector ready to rock.. are they all the same size or does it vary from manufacturer to manufacturer?? Thanks

circumference C is 2 x π x r
therefore diameter is C divided by π
