Just replaced a gasket for the coolant system but it still leaks. It's in a real pain of a place to get to so hard to ensure the surface is good and smooth.

Has anyone used liquid gasket in combination with a real gasket?
Just looking for feedback. Any particular brand recommended?

No problem with using liquid gasket plus gasket if other methods have failed. Just don't use too much. Too much is if any of it oozes out of the joint. Just the merest skim is enough. I hate seeing joints clagged up with masses of silicone.
Modern vehicles don't use many gaskets, just silicone.

It was a gasket for coolant. Metal.

It's describe as "gasket for water elbow". It's offside cylinder head petrol.

What's the surfaces of the head and pipe like?

I think with when I built my engine I also used a smear of Blue Hylomar on the new gasket I fitted.

Second the above. Just finished a full rebuild. Every coolant connection has a skim of Blue Hylomar either side of the gasket. Belts and braces.

The engine is in place and I am fitting the new gaskey by crawling under the van, so its all hard to see. Will dry it off and just go on the side of caution and use some liquid in addition to the new gasket. First time I have done a gasket and it leaked. Should I use a second new one ?

as long as you havent torn it it should be fine, but yeah a think film of blue hylomar or other such gasket stuff should be fine, make sure you tighten everything to spec and leave it to cure overnight til you put coolant through it.
