Hi Everyone,

Could someone help me in making sure I’m correctly identifying this bolt? In the attached image, it is halfway down the picture, right hand side of the picture, partially cut off. I believe it is the oil drain plug.

Second question: what is it screwed into? How easy is it to remove the component that it is screwed into? On my vanagon the “oil drain plug” hole has some stripped threads.

I’m getting conflicting answers in my search, and the bentley (from my search) lacks a diagram with this component labeled. To be clear, I’m asking what the metal part with all the straight lines is? Is it the crankshaft casing? Google search is telling me to fix the stripped threads that I’d have to drop the engine to split the engine casing to do a proper job of it…

Thank you for the link! I’d still like to know what that component of the engine is which the oil drain plug and oil pressure check valve are isntalled knto? The metal part with the parallel lines that look similar to a radiator.

Its the oil sump.

Thats what I thought initially, but when I look up the oil sump/oil pan, I get images that are nothing like what I’m looking at

If its not the sump how come it has a drain plug? The sump on these engines is not a separate part.
What do the pictures you have seen look like?

it's the cover for the oil pressure relief valve, it's M22 and there should be a sealing ring, which is either damaged or missing, part number N 013 829 3, Brickie has them

there's a spring and piston above the cover, be aware it may try to jump out,when you unscrew the cover

It’s the engine / crankcase , it’s not removable, best bet is an oversized sump plug repair kit if it has stripped threads although it may just need a new sump washer

I just saw the oil weep and the slightly mullered cover, no sign of a problem with the drain plug obvious in the picture

I don't think that picture is the OPs engine. I saw that very same picture on the samba last week. I think the OP might have copied it from there.
