MOT next week.
The offside rear drum is almost seized solid.
I have relaxed the handbrake cable but the drum is still very stiff.
Using my adapted tool through the hole in the brake backplate I'm trying to release the binding brakeshoe. But the adjuster keeps springing back.. Am l right that offside is clicked downwards to release?
Also, both rear suspension arms have lost their brake pipe support clips. Is this an MOT fail?

Click downwards on either side will back off that side brake. The adjuster needs to be pushed far enough to make the rachet lever jump a tooth, or it will spring back to its original position.
Brake pipe clips, probably only an advisory, but if it's rubbing it'll be very bad news!

My MOT man wouldnt fail it on those missing, odds on he wouldnt know it was supposed to be there ….. as for the adjusters , I’m sure they are the same n both sides?

For the sake of a few squids, why not get some, rather than let the pipes flap around and fracture or abrade through?

My MOT guy would notice, but, would remark....

Iirc the adjuster arm pulls the cog up inside the drum, (down plate side) to tighten brakes. Therefore the cog will have to be pushed up to release from the hole in the dust plate.
I have used a large zip tie from inside the arm out around the pipe and back through the hole, the locking mechanism keeps it in the arm. Did it a while ago and still there.

Many thanks. Working on it now. You are correct. Push down to tighten brakes and not to release.
Will report back with more details later.
Just getting Maxine to release the hub nut.

Finally got somewhere today.
Decided to take off the hub nut and use this cheap puller to wind out the drum: l bought the puller three months ago for replacing trailer wheel bearings. But the old worn bearings simply fell off each hub on the trailer. So it got stuffed in a large drawer mentally labelled Another Unnecessary Purchase.
But no! It saved the day.
For some reason l didn't photo brakes etc once drum was removed. Working against the clock for Sunday roast, l guess.
So l cleaned up and greased internal pivots and spring points. Adjusted brakes until locked, then two clicks back. Then on to adjusting handbrake back to appropriate position.
BTW the drum and wheel hub were well and truly mated. So a bit of knocky knocky soon sorted that out!

Draper 1" drive comes to our rescue. Plus additional help from the lovely Debbie Magee, and a five feet long scaffolding pole.





Cheap puller served me well.



And enough time to make a cauliflower cheese, too!

Something about this picture just seems off ?

Is it the fact that the plate with the bolts on is coming off with the drum?
Does look odd, ( correct me if I'm wrong) but the nut has been removed so both can come out together ?

Correct.
Once the hub nut is removed. The puller drifts off the drum and wheel hub together.

A last minute exchange of a brake cylinder solved the problem on OSR brake.
GSF came to the rescue by knocking out a genuine VW part for just 10 quid. So purchased two.



By 6.30pm, in failing daylight, l had it fitted and the brake system re-bled. A quick drive around the block convinced me there was air still lurking in the system. But too late now. MOT booked for 0800hrs next morning (last Thursday).

Meanwhile, l managed to lose my mobile phone (using it's torch, l forget to remove it from rear suspension arm on test drive ). But that's another story.

Anyhow, it passed the MOT without any advisories. So perseverance, and much help from this forum, saves the day...yet again!
