Hey,
So we have a Devon Eurovette (MY 85, registered 87) 1.9 DG with a four speed box.

So, while driving at 55mph and upwards, the charging/alternator light comes on. I think when going over 65mph it will go out, not been over 65. for a while, so not 100% sure on that.

When it starts to come on, it's flickering a bit and not to bright, the brightness increases and the light is steady.

Drop below 55 and it goes out again.

I've looked at the Wiki, Haynes and Bentley, there's nothing that I can see that covers this.

Battery three months old and starter motor one day old.

Any idea what this might be pointing to?

Thinking the relay?

Alternator brush pack , for about £15 and 15 mins to change it , it is a worthwhile investment, and if it isnt the fault you have a good spare

Yes this happened to me aswell ,t25 westy 1.6 t diesel. 
fitted new voltage regulator, all sorted

Alternator brush pack and voltage regulator are the same thing btw

Interesting, wonder what the thinkling is on the higher voltage regulator, all that springs to mind is marginaly cheaper wiring if implemented. 

Perhaps moden batteries prefere to be charged at higher voltage lower current?

12v Lead acid batteries never fully recharge from a single output source ( Alternator ) but charge better at over 14v , anything less than 14v is hardly going to keep up with use , as it is it will take over 40 mins to put back into a starter battery what you take out starting the engine , and you can only do that so many times before you have depleted the reserve of your battery .
To fully recharge a lead acid battery you need a three stage charger ideally , and then the last 15% will take three times as long as the first 85% .

But you won't get any more power, more volts = less amps.
