I took my van to the rolling road guy just for a basic diagnostics test to try and find out why the van is still popping and not running very well. Was told he suspected fuel getting into the oil for some reasons ,over fueling from the dellorto drla 40s carbs likely,and getting past the piston rings and causing the popping and sluggish acceleration. I've not driven the van much at all since discovering the running problems, probably around 120 miles in total. Would this have caused any major damage. What am I likely to have to replace on the engine. Hopefully just new piston rings. Would the engine have to be removed and would a leakdown test find the exact area of the problems.

Was it confirmed that there was a lot of petrol in the oil or was he just guessing? If you have a mechanical pump they can go bad as well and let fuel into the sump. So that might be worth checking.. although if assume you'd have an electric pump with dells.

Sounds odd though.. 1.9 or 2.1? Before you go tearing the engine down id do a compression test of the cylinders, check for airleaks and make sure the carbs are balanced otherwise it will run like a bag of spanners.

2ltr cu Aircooled . Electric fuel pump and regulator set to 2.5 psi. I done a basic fuel flow test and it worked out at approximately 1 litre per minute. Done a compression test a few weeks ago . Done twice straight after each other to get a good average reading. Cylinder 1 = 115,115 cylinder 2= 120,120, couldn't do cylinder 3 as had difficulty threading in the tester but will try it again. Cylinder 4= 130,128. Would a leakdown test give me a better idea what's happening in the head.

Forgot to mention we've done loads of checks for airleaks and valves , clearances ,manifold gaskets timing etc.

Have the Carbs been balanced correctly?

Running lean, carbs not set up, exhaust leak...

Doubtful of the petrol in oil reason?

The carbs was set up originally on the rolling road about 6 years ago when they were fitted. The van used to run lovely but started to loose power on acceleration recently especially up inclines. Started popping ,mainly while deceI erating .Haven't used the van a lot since I've owned it. What is an exhaust leak as I've recently had a new exhaust backbox and tailpipe fitted although the sluggishness was there before but not popping as much.

Stale fuel and/or ethanol crystals blocking the jets. If it was flooding due to stuck float bowl valves it wouldn't run at all, at best it would be very rich.
