Identifying engine

Hi all, my google skills are obviously not up to this but thankfully this forum is full of knowledgable people...

My old van had an engine replacement some time in the distant past. No documentation, not even an engine nr on the registration, which is apparently normal in Poland where I bought it.

Does anyone know how I can find out what the engine is? The block is stamped 1.9 D,.and that's all I know. The guy I bought it off said he had been told it came from a Jetta some time in the 90's.

I did find an engine number but can't find any way to look it up. I was at a VW parts dealer a few days ago and his computer system didn't go far back enough in time to tell me anything.

Nr is 028163373M if anyone knows how to get this info.

Thanks

Stick a picture of it up. Someone may recognise it. There won't be as many on here at the moment, as some are at Busfest. The AAZ was a popular replacement. Worth a read List of Volkswagen Group diesel engines - WikipediaImage

Download the pdf for vw engines and you can peruse which engines were fitted in Jettas.

028163373M is just the part number for the head. The engine number is under the 3rd injector stamped on a ( very rust ) flat on the block. There will be pics on the forum for the area if you search as it has been asked many times as to where it is.

Beaten to it!

Stamps on an engine block can be misleading for the entire setup.

My block is a 1V, head is a JR (hydraulic lifters) and everything else is off a JX.

I am doing the HG at the moment and it took a bit of time figuring out the correct HG.

Find the stamp for the block - on the block, Find the stamp for the head (top corner) and figire where the rest comes from.

Post a pic of the engine and someone will chime in.

Thanks guys, I can't find any number on the engine still. But here's a photo for anyone that might recognise it.

Does the paper sticker on the timing belt guard say something?

The valve cover says it is a 1.9 diesel for sure. The injectors are IDI the injection pump is a NA, so it is most probably a 1Y code. But it can be mismatched and be an AAZ with a NA pump

Here is the 1Y that I put in mine for reference:

This is just what I needed to hear, thank you! I'm not planning on doing any mods, and knowing that it's "approximately this normal VW thing with non-standard bits" is good enough.

It starts first time every time, runs smoothly. Now I know it's not an old aero engine from a Messerschmidt or anything I'll put the cover back on and leave well alone.
