Having recently posted about my electric problems..
Things got worse!
Driving on a Spanish motorway, the throttle stuck open, full speed!!
Couldn't see the issue (so obvious when I finally saw it! Arrrrgh...)
Towed of the motorway and help by an angel..
(I'd had the foot to the floor, a nut had come off a long 'limiter' bolt.. Reset the bolt.. Hey presto.

OK full confession time.
My van's a mess, previous owner blew the original engine, and accepted a Golf diesel 1.9 (MK 2.i think) as a replacement to get home from France..)
It goes really well 70mph, 120km per hour, and about 26MPG..all good.
(they had to put a power bump in the engine cover to allow for where the pump sits.. Still it's OK!)
The mechanic's 1stbreaction was "wrong pump"
I said it's got D/TD on the crank case and I was told 1.9lt.
He said that's the pump for a turbo, not this engine..
(is he right, is a good question.. But he seemed so sure..)

Next event was that he adjusted the automatic clutch, explaining that it was set high for starting in the cold UK, but I would need that in Southern Europe - sounds kosher..

I drove for a wee while, only too happy to be back on the road, then noticed blue smoke.
Stopped and saw dripping diesil smoking off the tailpipe.
Had no choice but to keep on going.

MPG's plunged, losing 50% of each tank..

I checked the forum, looked at the end pipe, and the fuel pipes generally..
Nothing leaking.
It appears to be coming from where the pump joins the main engine..

What's my next move?

The diesel sprays out under pressure onto the inside of the bumper, and up the back door /window, at speed..
Going slowly I lose much less, so clearly pressure is involved..

1. Tighten something on the fuel pump (I'm a total novice, please give clear instruction if so!)
2. Get a new pump..
3. Get the right engine!
4. Get a Subaru engine!! (hear people saying this, so just hoping to sound cool..)

Please see photos, area circled where fuel is gathering.

Any suggestions gladly accepted..

P. S there no fuel above these levels, where the pipes are by the plugs, top of the pump, it's all below where it meets the side of the engine

PPS - all dirty fixes gladly accepted, I'll take it to a garage if needs be, but am on a campsite in France for the next week, it I could sort it for the short term myself...

Your pump is a non turbo 1.9D pump.
Your engine block is 1.9D/TD. I assume they were matched and it is a 1Y code engine.

Re sealing the pump can be done DIY, but better to have it rebuilt anyways by a specialist.
Other than cahnging the pipes it is not a roadside repair.

Looks like the cold start lever seal , it’s easy to change but requires removing the pump

It can be done in situ but it is very fiddly ( I have done it thus ). Make sure that you place rags underneath the spindle to catch the nut that you will drop numerous times. The worst bit is getting the securing nut back on the spindle as the spindle disappears into the body as you try to get it started. Helps to have small hands - I haven't and also have arthritis so it will be easier for others to do. Don't attempt it if you don't have faith in your ability though.

I wasn't able to see the serial number, think the pump would need removing to check that?

Am I right in thinking your instinct is that this "looks like" the right pump?

If so, I'll just try to get the seals done..

Yes, it looks like the correct pump for the engine.
The engine serial is below the coolant flange so it is a bit hard to find. The drawing shows the coolant hoses removed.
