It'll do the job, but you can get brand new modern-fangled ones for about 40 to 50 quid, so I wouldn't pay anything more than 15 quid or so for that one...

those were sold by kay s catalogue s and woolworths from 1982-1984ish and later on some cc shops retailed them , lots were 2nd s or returns that said they were not that bad being derived from the same , albeit cheaper , designers of the president range of old ssb radio
you can get something more modern for the same cash ?

Wendy, If I had a choice between that Uniden and a new one for a tenner more, I'd pick the Uniden every time. They are dead reliable (buy a new modern CB for £50 and see if it last 25 years!) and sound v.good on both transmit and recieve.
The only downside is it's only 40 channels, a new one will give you eu band as well.
I saw a dead tatty version of that Uniden on eBay (with EU band added back when it was known as mid band), I recommended it to a friend.
When it arrived, he phoned me and said something along the lines of 'What the hell did I buy this for?' but after using it, it replaced his 'modern' midland unit...
Make them a 'best offer' of £25

top stuff, I reckon thats worth £25 all in, any day of the week. Esp. in good nick, box etc.
From what I've read on here, Mocki & Dan are hams.
Take it to Pickering, hams love to help people out with stuff like that. 
They'll have you up and running in a jiffy.

ok, all good on picking up the cb, although we still need an aeriel (any recommendations?) and advice on where to fit one on a full length viking roof (understand from dad they need mounting to a metal surface)

on a metal surface is ideal, it's all about having a 'ground plane'.
You can get 'no ground plane' antennas, but they are generally naff.
If you can get it mounted on the body somewhere, that's preferable, and as tall an antenna as poss is best. How big can you go?
It's all relative though, a small antenna on the bodywork will beat the pants off a biggie with no ground plane (ie mounted on a non metal roof)

Outside of that, if you want a simple,compact fit and forget, you can do worse than the wilson silverloads on here:

A 2 foot silverload will be discreet, not really that nickable, and will perform well if mounted on the van body.
Or if you want a monster, import a Predator 10K:

Bear in mind, whatever antenna you get, UNLESS it comes on a magmount (no good to you anyway) or specifically says 'no ground plane', you MUST mount it on a metal part. Perhaps on the back door, or on the top of a door ladder?
Get somebody who knows about CB, with a SWR metre, to check your set up & tune the antenna: bad coax or a bad ground or out of tune antenna can cook parts of your CB that you don't want cooking! Tip: dont transmit without an antenna plugged in!..
I'm sure those ham guys will have more than enough advice for you at Pickering anyway, hams tend to know more about antennas than anybody, as they usually design and build their own.

ok, got the cb. the guy we picked it up from threw in a swr meter for setting up an aerial. and has loads of aerials he would be willing to sell, problem is where/how do you have your aerials mounted bearing in mind we have a full length fiberglass roof?
he suggested mirror mount or possibly a bumper, i was wondering about gutter mounting? or is ther a tailgate option?
