Oil buzzer at end of long drive

Hi all,

Drove back from Devon yesterday 255 miles. The buzzer went off pulling into the services, sharp left turn decelerating about half way back. Heard it but didn't realise what it was, thought it was on the radio or something.

Then about 5 miles from home, decelerating onto a roundabout it went off again with the light.

I thought it was an oil level indicator so drove gently home but have now read the wiki page on the oil buzzer.

From wiki - "The warning light and buzzer can be tripped under hard deceleration, and also climbing very steep hills with tight bends, especially if there is low oil level in a diesel."

Is this sentence suggesting there is no oil pressure problem, just that the switch is a false alarm? Should next steps be to top off oil and drive as normal and see if it reoccurs?

Or is there potential for engine failure at this point? & it needs pressure test at the garage?. There has been some minor electrical gremlins on dash that have come and gone away.

What's next steps for fault finding? Diesel AAZ. Thanks

worth checking the real oil pressure when hot with a wet gauge and checking through the wiring for the oil pressure switches and buzzer of doom circuit, especially worth checking which high pressure switch is fitted, is it a 1.4bar one (black) or a 0.9bar one (grey) - tired old engines usually get a 0.9, if it doesn't make that sort of pressure at 2000 rpm the engine is possibly not long for this world; you might want to go thicker on the oil in the summer

Sounds to me like the BoD is working entirely correctly , and you have a oil issue , get it checked , dont assume its a electrical fault , more often than not in the circumstances you describe its real

You can get this from oil frothing if your baffle plate is missing/ineffective - see my post here https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=107034&hilit=definitive&start=15

Specifically this post, showing the baffle plate.

Thanks chaps. Just checked her over. Could any of the following cause a false alarm

1. Oil was really really low.

2. Oil filter is long overdue a change

3. Is this is the high pressure sender? (see pics) It looks like black one. If so Spade terminal was only half seated and wires look about ready to fall off/Hanging by a thread.

4. I recently had turbo oil return feed replaced. Is this relevant.

Hi, that's the low pressure sender nominal 0.3bar, blue/black wire. If your lucky you'll get away with a fresh 4l of 10/40w semi and a filter. You're already very lucky that dodgy wire was hanging on sufficiently to alert you to the state of the oil. You might want to get a pressure gauge fitted to keep an eye on the state what probably by now is a somewhat worn engine. Running engines low on oil is never a good thing.

Yeah I'm not in the habit of leaving it without oil but things have been a bit hectic, I knew I'd be changing oil and filter soon but kept putting it off. 3 trips in last 4 weeks.

I was thinking about a pressure gauge this morning, I understand there's a blanked off spot on the housing? Also seen a sandwhich adaptor that goes between filter and housing which look pretty good.

Any recommendations, guides etc?
